Creating Emergency Rules

This article will provide a walkthrough on how to setup 911 and other Emergency Numbers inside of the bvoip phone system.

What are Emergency Rules?

Emergency Rules bypass most normal calling restrictions such as PIN Protect, as well as trigger notifications in the system for compliance purposes. If not setup properly within the bvoip phone system, emergency service calls will not function as needed in an emergency situation. 

As emergency numbers can vary for every client and their locations, the bvoip phone system allows the ability to customize the emergency numbers for locations as desired.

This article reflects the US Emergency Number, 911. However 988, 112, and other respective emergency numbers also can be used accordingly based on your location.

Configure Emergency Numbers

  1. Go to Call Flow > Outbound Rules in the phone system
  2. Switch to the Emergency Rules tab at the top
  3. Click Add Emergency Rule
  4. Define the number(s) in the top right
    1. This can be a comma separated list
  5. Define an extension list or department/group if desired
    1. This is usually used when you have multiple E911 numbers reporting different addresses
  6. Set Route 1 to point at your SIP Trunk, but do not prepend or strip anything.
  7. If you have a special number for emergency services, you can enter that as the Caller ID value
    1. This is mostly used in the US and Canada for E911
  8. Click Save

You can now test if your provider supports a testing number. For most US providers the testing number is 933.
